Degree days measure how far each day's average temperature (½ of its high + low) sits from a comfort base — a simple way to compare how demanding a season was. Heating and cooling degree days use a 65 °F base (how much the day ran below or above it); growing degree days use a 50 °F base with an 86 °F cap, the standard yardstick for plant development.
